Vending machines comes in all shapes and sizes these days and the latest one from Lays is a cut above the rest. Launched in Argentina to promote their crisps (or chips depending which part of the world you are in) the general public are asked to add their own potato in to the machine and watch it turned in to crisps in as they wait. It’s all about emphasizing that all their crisps only have three simple ingredients and the entire process is shown within the machine right down to the potatoes being peeled and fried. Incredible technology right? Wrong. Look a little closer and you’ll see that it’s actually a video that is playing within the machine and all a bit of an optical illusion. It’s a bit of a shame really but the logistics of a machine like this with piping hot frying oil would be near impossible. As a marketing stunt though this will get plenty of attention with the only irony being that Lays are promoting the fact that they don’t hide anything within their products but their marketing is all about optical illusions and trickery. What do you think? Smart marketing or off message?
