Education is the Silver Bullet (to winning awards at #DMA2013)
The Digital Marketing Institute not only trained most of the winners at the Digital Media Awards in Dublin 2013 but takes away the prestigious Trailblazers Award.
Last Friday night, March 1st, the Samsung Digital Media Awards took place in the Convention Centre in Dublin. It was a fantastic night with the who's who of the digital sector out in their splendour! We were on top form, having been presented with the event’s inaugural Trailblazer Award.
But, hey, it’s not all about us! The majority of the winning teams are either trainers / lecturers with the Digital Marketing Institute or are students.
The fourth National The Sunday Business Post Digital Media and Marketing Summit will take place next Thursday March 7th, chaired by Anthony Quigley of the Digital Marketing Institute. Since its Launch in 2010 the Sunday Business Post Digital Media and Marketing Summit has grown each year to keep up with the ever changing and dynamic industry that is Digital Marketing.
The Sunday Business Post are delighted to announce that Brando are this year’s Gold sponsors for the Digital Media and Marketing Summit 2013. We are also happy to say that the Digital Marketing Institute, Ballywire and iON have also returned as sponsors.
This year’s summit will include four international speakers, Cedric Devitt from New York and three British Speakers from London, John Streit, René De Labré and Eamonn Carey as well as 9 Irish speakers Including Ian Dodson from the Digital Marketing Institute who will talk about why digital is all bark and no bite and not really the great white hope that we think it is.
On Thursday 7th February, the Digital Marketing Institute hosted a Mobile Marketing Conference in Dublin. Leaders in business and marketing professionals from all over the country came together to hear inspirational speakers from around the globe. These speakers provided us with a vast amount of statistics which clearly shows that 2013 is “the year of the mobile”. Along the way, they shared with us their predictions for the future, experiences with building mobile solutions as well as some great case studies and examples of mobile being used to enhance businesses.
All presentations were both thought-provoking and entertaining.
The “Mission Possible: Mobile Marketing 2013” conference highlighted the importance of Mobile Marketing for businesses.
Topics covered included Search, Social, Broadcast, Gaming, M-Commerce, Apps and Mobile Website Design. The overall theme from the day was that we must start with the customer and work back from there.
Here is a summary of what each of the speakers had to say:
We are looking for a Digital Content & Community Executive (Marketing) to work within a dynamic and internationally expanding company.
The Digital Marketing Institute is a leading industry body for the provision of Digital Marketing Training and was created to meet the huge increase in demand for digital marketing skills that currently exists in Ireland and around the world.
News Release:
Digital Marketing Institute plans to deliver certification programme through four universities in Malaysia and expects to educate 2,000 students in 2013.
Irish digital marketing training provider, the Digital Marketing Institute (DMI), has signed a major new partnership deal with Specialist Knowledge Centre of Malaysia to deliver DMI digital education and professional certification programmes in Malaysia and across the entire ASEAN region.
This brings to three the number of strategic alliances the company has agreed following two other deals in South Africa and India announced last month.
The Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation recently published a report telling us that there are currently 4,500 unfilled jobs in the IT sector in Ireland (digital is usually lumped in with "IT"). Why is this the case? Why is it that, during one of the worst recessions to hit this country, we still cannot fill these roles when so many skilled people remain unemployed?
While there is no simple answer, one of the major issues that underlies this problem is that the education system is failing us all. The educational goals that schools and colleges are clinging to are woefully out of date.
Adrian Moss- I am Director of a company called Focus Business Communications. We specialise in audio and video production and use social media campaigns to promote the content and help create and support online communities. I established the company in 2004 to take advantage of the emergence of Web 2.0. Since then we have worked with a variety of clients from the private and public sectors. We are also a research partner in the 3 year long EU funded www.foodrisc.org project which is looking at risk communication. Our role is to evaluate the use of social media during a food contamination incident.
The User Experience Professionals Association (UXPA), formerly UPA, is a global organisation with supporting local chapters around the world. The official launch of UXPA Ireland takes place on 8 November 2012
On Tuesday morning Ian Dodson was invited to the NewsTalks' studio to share his views on education in Ireland. During his talk on the Breakfast Show, Ian highlighted the drawbacks of the points race and lack of practical thinking behind academic programmes. He also shared his opinion on Irish 3rd level institutions, and their incapacity to prepare graduates for jobs market.
Today is the start date of the Postgraduate in Digital Marketing 2012/2013 and we are particularly delighted to feature the interview with Mark Swaine, one of the first to acquire DMI’s Postgraduate Diploma in 2011. Working between Toronto and New York, Mark is a remarkable example of how entrepreneurial drive powered by the expert knowledge of digital marketing can open amazing new opportunities!
Gary Reid completed our Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing in Spring 2011, which made him one of the few people in the country with a postgraduate level of education in internet marketing. A year and a half later, we caught up with Gary to see how he was getting on and to what extent our postgraduate course made an impact on his business.
On Tuesday, 25th September, Ian Dodson, the Director of the Digital Marketing Institute, and Minister of State for Training and Skills had a debate on the last Word with Matt Cooper on Today FM. Ian has been invited to the show to elaborate on his recent statement about the inadequacy of Irish graduates in a jobs market.
A HEA commissioned report on the education sector may be shelved because the government doesn't like it and the universities are afraid of it. Who's worse? The government for being an ostrich or the universities for being turkeys?
This month we are publishing case studies with our students who completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing, so they could share with our community their successes and achievements. Today we are featuring Rado Durina, who did the course in 2010/2011, the first year the postgrad was launched. Rado is a Social Media and Community Insights Manager at iReach, and is also working on an exciting new project with another past student of ours!
Next in our series of interviews with past students is Miguel Ángel Quiles Granado who completed Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing in 2011. Miguel now works as an Online Marketing Specialist at Les Roches Marbella International School of Hotel Management, and also runs his own digital marketing agency Enroiate.
I will be delivering a lunchtime seminar in Kilkenny (as part of the Kilkenny CEB Lunchtime Series) on October 4th. The title of my presentation is “Finding that Elusive Customer in all that Digital Noise”.
As every marketer knows, the world has changed. The education that you received in college is now defunct (unless you are under 25!). Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google have completely made everything you thought that you know about marketing outdated.
I travelled to a conference recently in the US, as i was leaving the hotel on the last day I slipped on some wet marble and fell backwards. My mac book pro was in a bag on my shoulder and it hit the ground first and stayed upright. As I fell through the air it was like time stood still. I realised the mac was under me
We have asked our past students about studying for the Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing, their experience with various online marketing channels, how their careers have changed since. The first in a series of interviews is Aoife O’Driscoll, who was part of the Postgraduate class 2010/2011. Aoife is now a Marketing & Communications Manager at Powerscourt Estate.
Reports from both Harvard and the OECD are seriously questioning the centrality of a college degree in our education system. Both are encouraging governments to provide “education pathways” for students that result in an industry driven qualification that has currency in the labour market.
Harvard’s Paths to Prosperity Study highlights Finland’s approach where 43% of 16 year olds opt for a three-year program that blends work with learning and routes them to specific roles in the labour market.
When I was growing up in Glenageary, Co Dublin all those years ago, my father used to tell me how important it was to get my “Leaving Cert” exam, so that I could get a good job. When I got to secondary school, I was then told that I would be much better off with a primary degree.
I did a relatively poor Leaving Cert but managed to scrape into college to study Applied Physics and Maths. Why did I choose this course? Why not! I was the kind of kid who enjoyed the sciences, taking apart radios, building Meccano and the like.
There are 5.9 billion mobile phones in use worldwide right now – assuming one phone per person it would mean 87% of entire population use mobiles. At the same time only 1% of marketing budgets are reported to be spent on marketing through mobiles. This makes it currently the most efficient, most personable - and most underused channel available to marketers today. That’s just one of the impressive and truly eye opening stats we have learnt from mobile experts at our Mobile Marketing Conference on August 16.
I’d like to start this post with saying a big huge THANK YOU to the panel of speakers at our Mobile Conference today. All presentations were very interesting, engaging and most definitely inspiring! I certainly picked up a few new tips, and feel appropriately equipped with knowledge to implement our own mobile strategy (or as Patrick McConville of ICAN pointed out – add fully functional mobile layer to our marketing strategy).
To help professionals within Ireland fill in the social media skills gap, we at the Digital Marketing Institute came up with a full Diploma course entirely focussed on social media marketing. We are confident that professionals with strong digital skills are going to lead this country towards the economic recovery, and that’s why we would like to offer a place on the upcoming Professional Diploma in Social Media Marketing, which will run on Aug 13-17, free of charge to a person currently seeking employment.
Internet, TV, newspapers, radio, outdoor, and cinema all saw an increase in ad spend in the beginning of 2012 compared to last year, according to Nielsen’s quarterly Global AdView Pulse report. Although TV continues to attract the majority of advertising dollars, Internet advertising is increasing at a faster rate than other media types.
Internet advertising increased 12.1% more in Q1 2012 than one year prior. This is nearly 4 times the global rate which is increasing at a rate of 3.1%. The Global Adview Pulse report shows that with consumer confidence in advertising is rising across nearly all media types including TV, newspapers, radio, outdoor, Internet, and cinema.
On June 21st our second event this year for DMI members took place in partnership with Facebook. It was yet another fantastic morning, with digital marketeers from all backgrounds gathering together to hear the latest and the juiciest from the social media giant. We really thank everybody who braved the stormy weather and turned up in the Chartered Accountants House at such an early hour (the event kicked off at 8am).
The presentation was delivered by Andrew Weld-Moore and Neasa Costin, who covered interesting statistics, most uptodate additions and tips on how to make the best of your Facebook marketing.
Google+ continues to struggle to gain audience, Google integrates G+ with search more and more. I largely agree with this article on Why Google+ is the only thing that matters – at least to marketers. While I disagree strongly with GM’s decision to drop all Facebook advertising, I do understand the underlying motives. G+ is becoming the new tool for optimizing organic SEO. Links have been marginalized, in favor of social media.
Here’s more info on Google’s new G+ Local from Matthew O’Such on the Automotive Digital Marketing Community. I’d recommend you check out your own G+ Local pages to see how you are affected by these changes.
Yesterday's article entitled Who's educating the educators, I disucssed how we might address the growing "digital divide" that is happening between parents/teachers and kids.
As a follow up that (and as a result of a lot of positive feeedback to the article) I would like to share this infographic entitled the Pros and Cons of Social Media in Education.
We can learn a lot from what is going on elsewhere in the world

Here’s a question – which is more important – Education or an associated Certificate/Award? A significant trend is emerging in the online space – education is being separated from the certification.
Take for instance, the announcement by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) that they are to give away their courses for FREE, through the newly created “M.I.T.x” interactive online learning platform. However, the award will not be a regular M.I.T. degree, but rather a credential bearing the name of a new not-for-profit body to be created within M.I.T; revenues from the accreditation, officials said, would go to support the M.I.T.x platform.
M.I.T. pioneered online learning 10 years ago by posting course materials online from almost all its classes. Its free OpenCourseWare now includes nearly 2,100 courses and has been used by more than 100 million people.
But M.I.T. is not alone. There is an increasing number of other excellent FREE online education resources, examples being BBC, Khan Academy, Academic Earth, and LearningSpace to name just a few.
However, as pointed out above, what these online colleges offer is an education, not an award.
So, what does this availability of free education mean? Will it make universities redundant? Will people continue to pay to go to the classroom? Will we in the Digital Marketing Institute have to offer our courses for free?
To answer this, consider this question – let’s assume that you are being interviewed for a new job (or perhaps you are the interviewer!). Would you prefer to have the education alone or the education AND the certification (which is effectively
The very pointed message that we in the Digital Marketing Institute are receiving from our Advisory Council (including Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Microsoft, etc) is that, in every single market, there is a very recognisable skills gap.
Wherever you live, there are simply not enough digital marketing professionals to meet the demand. A talent gap has developed between the skills that advertising and marketing jobs require and the number of people who possess those skills. This challenge is one that is affecting all sectors.
The talent pool is simply not large enough and those with the skills are in high demand. The good news (for the job seekers) is those with the required skills are commanding salaries of €80,000 and more.
There are jobs a-begging.
Digital marketing budgets and spending are growing at a rate of at least 20% per annum. The digital sector is treating the recession with contempt! To keep up with demand, the country needs intelligent, skilled professionals – lots of them, as fast as possible!
And the great thing about this sector is that it is exportable. Irish agencies – including Cybercom, RingJohn, Digital Marketing Institute and Adforce to name a few – are blazing an international digital trail.
Ireland has a flourishing digital marketing sector. One of the things that we need in this country is for the “establishment” (including the government and the universities) to recognise the opportunity and not be fearful of it!
Maybe Santa will come in on a fast broadband sleigh and bring good educational tidings with him!
Digital Marketing Institute, the Dublin based professional training and certification organisation, has launched a new operation in Dubai. This new organisation will train and certify students in all aspects of digital marketing throughout the Middle East region.
This new sister organisation, Digital Marketing Institute Middle East, will start offering Professional Diploma courses in the UAE from January and plans to expand across the Arab world in 2012.
Digital Marketing Institute Middle East will meet the growing demand in the region for digital marketing skills.
"Any of the digital marketing professionals we have spoken to here in the region - and we have spoken to a lot of them - will tell you that their biggest challenge is just finding those local skills," said David Carpenter, the chief executive of the newly formed Digital Marketing Institute Middle East. "There is a major problem here, and it's only going to accelerate."
One local Irish entrepreneur in the region's fledgling e-commerce industry confirmed that finding specialists in digital marketing is difficult.
"It's one of the challenges I faced," said Paul Kenny, the founder and chief executive of the daily deals site Cobone, at the launch. "There are actually not many people here practising digital."
“We are delighted with the establishment of Digital Marketing Institute Middle East” said Anthony Quigley, co-founder of Digital Marketing Institute. “Digital marketing is the fastest growing and most dynamic sector in the global economy today. It has enormous potential in the Middle East for economic development, job creation and business. We look forward to helping to make this region a global centre
The ever-increasing demand for digital marketing continues tirelessly! Running in parallel with this demand (which outstrips supply throughout the globe) is the requirement for associated education in an effort to help traditional marketers to understand this new paradigm.
Digital Marketing Institute is one of the few businesses in Ireland helping to meet this demand and seem to be hitting the mark with full employment for students.
Digital Marketing Institute is accepting the next intake of students for their Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing. This is the only such postgraduate qualification that is fully accredited in Ireland. It is certified by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) under the European Qualifications Framework. It therefore provides students with a recognisable, transferable, international qualification.
The course is taken over 8 months. The contact hours comprise 48 lectures, 4 workshop/tutorials, taken over 2 Semesters. All of the lectures are very interactive and packed with case studies and workshops throughout. Lectures are delivered by practising experts from the digital marketing industry who are currently planning and implementing winning digital marketing campaigns on behalf of their clients.
As stated, to date, there has been 100% employment success from this course, with previous students securing senior roles within the digital marketing sector.
Some of the organisations that past students now work with include Google, Facebook, ESB, Lisney, Westin Hotels, Ladbrokes, Barclays
The Digital Marketing Institute has gathered an elite cluster of business and digital media specialists to help give online businesses a kick start through two dedicated training programmes.
The goal is to help clients create the ideal blueprint for building their online business. Along with identifying the right business model, they will have a comprehensive overview of all the major disciplines required including site development, marketing, e-commerce, operations and finance. A successful online company has many components. For example, understanding the online marketplace is critical to defining the brand and business model. Mapping out marketing, advertising and legal strategy prior to web development will avoid expensive delays and changes. It is vital to get the right advice at the right stage to minimise the risks.
When it comes to the web more and more people are suffering from a split personality. What we do at home as consumers and users of the web is completely different from what we try to do as business people when we promote our company online.
As Digital Marketers the one thing that differentiated us from traditional media was our ability to provide real and meaningful numbers. As Marketers we took great solace in the clarity they provided but we've gotten complacent and in the race to out do each other we've reverted to type. I'll see your 700 miliion and raise you a billion.
A quick synopsis of the the 2011 Digital Salary & Employment Survey from Prosperity.ie confirms our worst fears at Digital Marketing Institute about the quality of graduates that our universities are producing in this country. For some time anecdotal evidence has pointed towards the lack of digital education at third level. I recently spoke witheven s marketing graduates (Class of 2011) who are starting the Digital Marketing Institute Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing in the past 3 weeks. When asked what percentage of their marketing degrees covered digital? the unanimous response was ZERO!!
Yesterday we came across a possible Internet fraud and identity theft issue. I wanted to highlight this in case you are also subject to this abuse.
Events (taking place in London) purporting to be "Digital Marketing Modules" (using content, logos and people associated directly with the Digital Marketing Institute) were hosted on 4 different event web sites, namely
Eventbrite
Brownpapertickets
Amiando
Ticketleap
(Click on the image and you see an example of what this person has done)
The perpetrator (who supplied his name and phone number as Simone Savage with a phone number +44 845 299 6048) simply copied content directly from the Digital Marketing Institute web site and claimed to be running a course.
I called this person on the above number and he answered to the name Simone. I asked him about this course and he told me that he was running it in partnership with with the Digital Marketing Institute. I then explained that I was calling from the Digital Marketing Institute and asked him to remove these pages. He said that he would.
I then emailed the Support and legal departments of the hosting web sites (mentioned above) - Eventbrite were back onto me immediately (although they have yet to remove the offending page). Ticketleap have removed the page. I have yet to hear from either Amiando and Brownpapertickets (who are both still hosting this "event").
I have also been in contact with the UK's Fraud Reporting agency (www.actionfraud.org.uk/). I have also been in contact with the Garda Fraud office in Harcourt Square and they reckon that it might be a UK issue.
Of all of the Digital Marketing channels available to sales people Email Marketing is still one of the most effective ways to generate sales. BUT BUT BUT, successful email marketing is about moving along a path from Quantity to Quality. In other words it's not about volume, it's not about shotgun blasts to thousands of unsegmented email addresses with no reporting or follow up. It is about the quality of the list, the quality of the content and the quality of the follow up.
A simple but extremely powerful case study to illustrate how good email marketing works.
We were recently called by a software company with 1400 customers on their books. They provided financial software and in the downturn their business pretty much fell off a cliff. The MD was scrambling for ideas and one of the staff mentioned digital marketing. The idea was dismissed as taking too much time and delivering too few results.
This sales guy was not deterred and hired us out of his own pocket to implement an email marketing campaign. He took the 680 customers he was responsible for and through conversations with 10 close clients formed a picture of 4 issues that were dogging his customers in the changed environment. 3 of these issues he could solve by up selling add-ons from his own company and a fourth was solved with a plug in from a partner company.

"Fiddling around the edges" is the best way to describe the plans from the various election candidates I've bumped into on my doorstep and at the dart stations in the past few days. These plans are minuscule irrelevancies in comparison to the debt crisis that faces this country.
A decision was made 18 months ago to absorb the debts of the banks into the debts of the state. This travesty best described recently as "capitalism for the masses and socialism for the banks" has virtually bankrupted our country. Right now the major European powers are deciding the fate of the country at a series of sessions in Europe. We are represented at these talks by Brian Cowen, the man with no mandate to lead or represent this country.

It was like watching a mugging in broad daylight as the ECB/IMF team managed to convince the government to accept more debt as a way of alleviating the debt problem. While the opposition is correct to slam the raiding of the pension reserve fund, I was sceptical about their plans to use it as a stimulus package. In fact I'm sceptical about stimulus packages in general. Government's essential role is to create a well regulated business environment and then get out of the way and allowing Irish businesses to build the economy.
As we escape (somewhat) from the catastrophy that was 2010, I'm gazing into my crystal ball and highlighting 3 things that are going to significantly improve, influence and shape our lives for 2011.
1. WOMEN 2. WOMEN 3. WOMEN.

For an FMCG advertiser the web brings a host of challenges and digital marketers need to deliver analysis beyond the standard analytics feedback with measures that marketing managers are familiar with. This recent campaign for Velvet Toilet Tissue has examined the true brand effects of online video & rich media in the Irish market. Irish digital agency, Bark, has shown that using a combination of online video & display advertising in isolation leads to a dramatic uplift in brand awareness, message saliency and likelihood to purchase.

Google may have plenty of traffic and extraordinary revenue, but Facebook is just plain sticky and getting stickier. According to Information Week, Facebook accounts for a quarter of all page view on the internet and 10% of all Internet visits.
The latest issue of the AMAS "State of the Net" was released last week. One of the articles talks about the Digital Economy. Now, our folks in AMAS reckon that the latest figures from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) is good news and that the results are "stellar". Ireland is ranked at position #17 (globally) for digital economic activity. Perhaps 17th is a good position to be in?
Companies who don't even advertise online are now using digital marketing tools to shape their offline marketing campaigns. A client of ours was recently preparing a national radio campaign advertising their new service. They run these radio ads once per quarter and while discussing their possible use of the web we suggested they do some keyword research before writing the script of the radio ad to see exactly what words and phrases their target audience were using to describe their products and services.
Stewart Curry, design director for X Communications, is co-ordinating an excellent chatrity event taking place in November. Called "24 The Web", this is a 24-hour web design challenge in which teams building a website for a charity. The point of the chaallenge is to highlight the importance of design, standards, content and process in developing a site, in a fun and challenging way.

I recently audited a new client's digital marketing strategy and implementation.
They were frustrated with the results of their efforts so far and wanted some advice and guidance on how to get better return for their investment. Their budget was significant but the return was negligible. Having reviewed their digital activities, I was struck by a common theme in each of the channels they were using. All of their activities had one goal, drive traffic to their site. In trying to explain to them what was wrong with their digital marketing I told them about an Aunt of mine.
I have an aunt who insists that all parties in a house should happen in the kitchen.
She emigrated from Ireland 40 years ago and when she returned last Christmas she stayed with my family for our new year celebrations. She has fond memories of growing up in Ireland and all of her memories are of being with her family in the kitchen. She insists that any gathering or event in a house should take place in the kitchen. Invariably after a few glasses of wine she carves off one of the guests in the sitting room and works them slowly towards the kitchen. Which is always empty and cold.
Much digital marketing is wasted when all it tries to do is move the party.
We try to move people from where they are online to our empty websites. We expend all of our budget, energy and efforts trying

To retain certified status and continue using the badge within your marketing collateral, Google AdWords professionals MUST meet the requirements of the new program.
One of the maddening things about being in marketing today is that the digital part keeps changing! Nobody understands what you do. And the pressure to keep abreast of these changes is immense. You toil away at your digital marketing, trying to make it to the top of Google, struggling with Email Marketing and Social Media, building your traffic and brand online. You are self taught. You have strived for everything you know and understand about digital marketing. Nobody handed you the “How to do Expert Digital Marketing” handbook.
The Digital Marketing Institute has announced that we are now offering a FETAC accredited Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing. This Diploma course is designed to enable you to develop a customised and focused digital marketing plan and strategy that will enable you and your organisation increase sales and become even more profitable.
Earlier in the year, we hired a professional to work with on some PR. She came to us with the right CV – social buzz building, online PR, works with the media, etc. About 2 weeks into the contract, she had us chasing down all kinds of new directions. She tried to convince us that everything is in a constant state of change – and that we had to change everything along with it!
When I worked for Microsoft, all I heard there was that “the only constant is change” (I even started believing this and using it in my presentations!)

Investing in SEO training and internet marketing is no longer an option - it's a necessity. Search engine optimisation or SEO is the first step taken by many businesses to make sure their website is visible on Google and the other search engines. Once you've decided to undertake SEO as part of your marketing activities, you have to consider how you will implement this within your organisation. Your first decision then will be whether to outsource your SEO to an external agency or to invest in SEO training.
Google has announced the AdWords Campaign Experiments, or ACE. This tool helps you to optimize your AdWords account by letting you accurately test and measure changes to your keywords, bids, ad groups and placements. The Text on your Advert Matters!
Without relevant, compelling ads, you could be missing out on valuable sales. But you don't need to be a professional copywriter to succeed with AdWords.
Great ad text starts with these three tips.
We recently ran the Google AdWords "Seminars for Success" (Google Certiied) training course in Dublin. This is a 2 Day course. Here is what Joseph Blair (of Horti Trends) had to say about the Google AdWords Training course ....
Next Google AdWords Seminars for Success course takes place in September 2010.
As I am sure you know, the Digital Marketing Institute offers the Diploma in Online & Digital Marketing course in two options
12 Week Part Time course, comprising 12 @ 3 hour lectures between 6.30pm and 9.30pm (the day of the week varies, usually taking place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays)
1 Week Full Time that is run Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.15pm each day for 1 week.
(Of course, the course content is the same for both options).
This Diploma course is delivered by some of the leading exerts in the country in the digital marketing sector. This includes online marketing professionals who either run their own business and senior managers within their company.
We are often asked (and I mean just about every day!) which option is more suitable. Well, in all honesty, we cannot answer that for you .
One would think that the answer is simple - people who attend the 12 Week Part Time course are working in full-time jobs and those who take the Full Time 1 Week Diploma are unemployed. NOT SO!
Quite often, a business simply cannot wait the 12 weeks for their staff to learn everything about digital marketing so they elect to send them on the 1 Week full time course. Also, it is quite often the MD or the CEO who elect to attend the course (to check it out, as it were!). However, we often find that it is "junior" marketer who first attends the course - this is then followed up by the senior staff taking
We put together an email with the 4 problems and their relative solutions with links for each back to
Following on from our initial Review of the iPad and its impact on Digital Marketing, a new report looks at how the iPad will cause the entertainment, publishing and information industries to undergo a radical paradigm shift in their methods of delivering entertainment and information to consumers. A new report from Rider Research maintains that Apple has created a leisure media device that consumers can use throughout the home: for reading books, playing movies and music or as an instruction manual for home repairs or cooking.

We got hold of the iPad approx 3 days after launch (via apple, via ebay, via Sanfrancisco, via UPS) (If you can beat that send me an email and claim my crown!!!)
Who cares? What will it mean for Digital Marketing?
If the web has untethered us from the broadcast and publishing schedules of tv channels and newspapers, then mobile computing frees us from the desk and the pc. Remember while there are 2 billion tvs in the world there are 5 billion mobile phone contracts. As a means to access and consume media, mobile devices are leading the party.
The iPad averaged .03% all web traffic for the first ten days after launch.
Think about it. That’s 03% of ALL web traffic, for a NEW device that only just launched. These numbers match the March numbers for all BlackBerry devices. See Usage Trends Here. Mobile is a crucial and integral part of Digital marketing and features as a key lecture in our Digital Marketing Diploma Course (Shamefaced Plug!)
Review
Firstly, Ignore all the tech websites, they're coming at the iPad from the point of view of the tech obsessed geek mob. i.e. "I cant open it up with a screw driver and connect it to my ford capri or my zx81 emulator so its no good". I'm looking at this tool purely from the point of usability. i.e. does it allow me to do what I need to do.
1. What apple does best.
Apple has conquered the most important aspect of any technology and that's the user interface. What do

It was startling last November to read that spending on online advertising in the UK had for the first time surpassed spending on TV advertising. This watershed was more incredible given how far behind Ireland is in terms of adoption of Digital Marketing. Spend is the ultimate litmus test of where an industry is in terms of its embrace of a particular channel. And while we await propper figures from the IAB I would like to gaze into my crystal ball and predict that spend on digital marketing in Ireland as a percentage of advertising budgets still won’t pass 10%. Why do I make this prediction? For digital marketing to spend in Ireland to come anywhere near UK levels we must overcome 3 hurdles....
It looks like Google is about to pull out of China and will shut down it's Chinese-language search engine in the aftermath of spying and hacking allegations that emerged in recent months.
Baidu (rival to Google in China) shares have jumped as a result.
China has denied any role in the attacks on the computers of 20 US businesses and Chinese human rights activists, which prompted Google to threaten to close its Chinese search engine.
In January, Google’s chief legal officer David Drummond revealedthat Google and a number of other companies based in China were hacked and that hackers attempted to access the Gmail accounts of notable civil rights activists.
The controversy has been simmering ever since but now it is increasingly likely Google will exit the massive Chinese market.
Baidu shares triple over year
US depositary shares in rival firm Baidu jumped on the news. Baidu climbed 3.2pc to $567.55, more than tripling over the past 12 months.
According to web analytics company StatCounter, at the end of 2009, Baidu held 56pc of the Chinese market compared to Google’s 43pc.
In recent months, Baidu has been deploying a new advertising system it has dubbed Phoenix Nest.
Talks between Google and the Chinese government are understood to be ongoing but reports suggest little is materialising. Google is adamant it will not accept self-censorship.
It is expected that Google’s pull out from China could happen in the next few weeks.
Without a well-focused list of prospects and clients, your email marketing goes unseen. This article is all about how to go about building and maintaining your contact list so you can reach the people your business covets the most: loyal customers and members.
1. Ask in person
When your customers or members come into your place of business or attend one of your events, are you asking for their email address? Letting them walk out the door without asking is equivalent to losing a valuable asset. Why not ask?
You'll be surprised that customers will give you their address more often than not. You just have to ask for it.
There are multiple ways to do so. One way is to give your team an incentive to ask. I recommend making it a contest to see how many email address one can collect over a given shift or time period. Everyone likes to win, so make a game of collecting email addresses.
You should also advertise the availability of your newsletter throughout your establishment or event venue. Put placards on tables, a signup book by the register, and signs on the walls. At your event, ask people when they check-in or register if they would like to be added to your email list.
2. Ask online
Asking online might be a little easier for some, since it removes the human fear of rejection. And there are multiple touch points where you can solicit your customers for their email address on the Web.
You just have to LOVE the Apple business model. They don’t have to worry about silly stuff like this (New Windows phones won’t run current apps). Why, because they make their own hardware for it to run on. I have no doubt that someone will have a good laugh at my expense some day but ‘the future’ to me is building your own hardware and loading with your own software.
Can you imagine if BMW or Audi decided 30 years ago only to build engines. Every man and his dog could build the car, any car, pick a car…. Where would Audi and BMW be now. Well we are seeing the slow burn of the once giant Microsoft. I know, I will probably live to regret this prediction…… but hey, we all love a good controversial blog.
Microsoft has said its new software for smart phones, Windows Phone 7 series, is a “clean break” with the past. Now it’s clear just how clean that break is: The new phones, expected late this year, won’t run any applications written for older versions of Microsoft’s phone software.
It has previously also been revealed that those with existing Windows Mobile 6.5 devices will not be able to upgrade to the newer Windows Phone 7 platform with a software update.
In a blog post Thursday, Microsoft executive Charlie Kindel, who handles contact with outside software developers, said that jettisoning support for older applications was necessary to make the new operating system as powerful and user-friendly as possible.
If Charles Dickens will allow me I'll hijack and invert a quote of his. Companies who are successful online are successful in different ways, whereas companies who fail, all fail in the same way.
Thanks to Perry Marsall and Howie Jacobson for ths following Top 10 AdWords Tips (actually, they are in the form of thetop AdWords mistakes so you need to invert!).
Here are the Google AwWords tips (ie don't make these mistakes!):
1. Neglecting to Split-Test Your Ads. I've gotta say one of the coolest discoveries of my whole life was, in my first week of playing with AdWords 5+ years ago, noticing that "create new ad" link and seeing that I could create a 2nd and 3rd and 4th ad and try different text. Running them simultaneously, then seeing how teeny tiny changes made huge differences. I still get jazzed about this. It's like practicing psychology without a license.
2. Letting Google Retire Your Ads Without Testing: In Campaign Settings, when you turn "Optimize Ad Serving" OFF, you declare a winner and a loser much faster. Turn that option off if you're checking in every day.
3. Split Testing for Improved CTR Only: At first, Click Thru Rate is the only thing you can measure. You want it high so you get the most traffic. But eventually what REALLY matters is conversion rate and cost per new customer. Sometimes high CTR ads don't bring buyers. Conversion is what matters most.
Have a Twitterful Christmas from the Digital Marketing Institute.
What???
This is a little experiment that we thought we would try - can we get to the #1 position in Google for the term "Have a Twitterful Christmas"? Why would we do this?
Well, if you have attended any of the Digital Marketing Institute courses, then you will know that, with the right approach, you can get your chosen term to the top of Google. But it takes effort and smarts.
Why Have a Twitterful Christmas? Well, we reckon that Have a Twitterful Christmas is specific enough NOT to be a highly competitive term and therefore we reckon that we can get to the opt of Google with ease. And if you are reading this, then it might just have worked. And we might just have done all the right things ... blog, video, images, content, tags, etc
Nearly nine out of every 10 businesses intend to maintain or increase their marketing budgets in 2010. One half expect their customers to be spending more in the coming year.
Email Marketing and social media marketing are at the top of the list of marketing tactics respondents will increase spending on in 2010. Search Engine Marketing came in third.
Combining social media and email marketing is a growing trend. More than four out of every 10 business executives said integrating the two tactics was one of their most important email marketing initiatives for 2010, just after improving performance and targeting and growing opt-in lists.
Around one-quarter of respondents had already implemented an integrated strategy, and another 24% had formulated a strategy and were researching how to put it in practice. But 18% of business executives wanted to add social components into their e-mail campaigns and did not know where to begin.
The above results camefrom a survey comnducted by StrongMail

Facebook recently announced that they had over 350 million users. So, the population of Facebook now exceeds that of America. Since September, Facebook Social Media network has added 50 million users, which means it now finds itself with 350 million of them.
There they are, cavorting away in cyberspace so thoughtfully (and expensively) provided by Facebook, where they post photographs of themselves in embarrassing situations, write affectionate or silly messages on one another's "walls", become "fans" of obscure comedians, join witty "groups" to support the Tiger Woods driving school and do other cool things too numerous to list. And all without paying a cent!
The above piece comes from, in the main, a piece in the Observer newspaper from December 6. The title says it all: “Facebook now has 350m users – and there’s no point in advertising to them.” Why? Because online advertising “really works” only in the context of search, where user motivation increases the likelihood of interaction with ads.
Of course, as we in the Digital Marketing Institute have been saying for a while now, it is not the the size that matters but the quality. So, let's consider the advertising possibilities.
Let's say that you are advertising "green training shoes". Now, which would be better - have someone SEARCH for "green trainers" (using Google or their favourite serach engine) or woudl you be better advertising to someone who just might be interested in green shoes cos they happen to hang around on Facebook?
This is exactly why advertisers are spending their advertising euro's on Google. The
ICT players Microsoft, Dell, IBM, Siemens, Eircom and Lionbridge have warned that reskilling and training are crucial to secure the 80,000 jobs outlined in the Government’s green strategy.
The companies who sit on the board of Fastrack to IT (FIT), an innovative programme now in its 10th year, focused on returning long-term unemployed individuals to the workforce, say that in one niche alone – wind turbine maintenance – as many as 1,500 jobs could be created.
Government announcement welcome
The group welcomed the Government’s announcement that 80,000 jobs could be created through the emerging green economy sector they but highlighted the point that these jobs are of no use unless Irish people have the skills to work in them.
FIT in partnership with industry, government, education and training providers, mainly FAS and the VECs, as well as with local development agencies, has successfully trained 8,000 long-term unemployed people over the past decade.
The Digital Marketing Institute is also playing it's part - during the coming year, the company, Ireland's only training firm specialising in digital marketing, is expecting to re-skill up to 500 marketing professionals in Ireland and UK.
75% of SME's and small businesses will increase their spending on email marketing next year. 70% of themn will also spend more money on social media and social marketing. This is all according to a survey conducted by VerticalResponseand email marketing provider.
Less that 4% of those business surveyed will NOT be using email marketing as part of thier online marketing mix.
However, one of the interesting things to come out of the study is that more than 70% of them would not engage in either TV or radio advertising.
Amid the popularity of email and social media marketing, more than one-half would do no banner advertising in 2010.
You can read more about this survey on the eMarketer web site.
Google AdWords is text only advertising. There are no images or videos or any of the other rich content that is currently associated with banner advertising. Therefore, the branding possibilities are limited. As an example, have a look at how companies like O2 and Vodafone use a combination of text-based and image-based adverts to build and enhance their brands.
So, while text is often useful, sometimes videos and pictures are a more effective way to receive information. For example, if you want to learn how to open a bottle of wine, a video showing you how to do this is likely the best result for your search. Over the past few years, Google has blended videos, images, maps and more into the search results on Google.
It also makes sense for Google to provide richer types of information in the ads. For example, if you are looking to buy your mother a new handbag for the holidays, you might want to see pictures, prices, the addresses of boutiques in your area and a map of how to get there — all within the advert.
To provide a better search ads experience, Google has been developing and testing a variety of new ad formats. These formats are focused on giving you the information you need, while ensuring that the adverts continue to be relevant and useful.
