I Broke the Law!

I broke the law, I broke it at least once a week.

I downloaded movies and TV series from illegal filesharing websites. (I was not a pusher though, just a casual user for personal use).

My other half and myself haven’t had a TV aerial or cable service for over a year. I simply got tired of surfing through reruns of Friends and all the other complete garbage that passes for TV these days. Yes I'm talking about you, star pop idol search brother bunkum.

Why did I stop? Well because the people who make movies and TV series came up with a way to make it easier for me to pay and view than to download from pirate sites. The same thing happened a few years ago. I used to download music illegally from Napster until iTunes made it easier to pay and access the music the way I wanted to.

The content makers tied the content and themselves to the production and distribution channel (the DVD or the CD became the product instead of the movie or music on it) and they based their revenue on this model and couldn’t see a way to move forward when the physical disc stopped selling.

The technology to allow the distribution of content online has existed now for 15 years and yet the movies and music businesses have fought the use of these technologies tooth and nail for years. (They also fought the VCR, the cassette, the DVD recorder and they fought the Web.)

So what allowed me to move from illegal to

The Desk Of The Future Will Integrate All Of Your Social Profiles

If you thought the iPad was the future of touch computing then you could be very wrong as this video shows a touch screen desk that is launching in 2012 that could change how we use traditional computers. The EXOdesk is like a giant version of an iPad mixed with a traditional desktop and it looks like it would not only be fun to use, but also incredibly practical. The desk, which will apparently cost $1,299, includes the ability to drag and drop content around the surface as well as pulling in things like your RSS feed and latest tweets.

From a social perspective, you can see how something like Facebook would fit in here and allow you to interact with your photos and other rich media content in an unique way. I’ve never been a huge fan of the iPad because unlike most users who see it as a recreational device, I prefer something I can work on. This fits the bill perfectly with a solid keyboard, and it should actually make us all more efficient. With a relatively affordable price tag and the technology launching as early as next year, this could take off in a big way and I personally will be first in line.

Shortcuts for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 Ninjas

According to Wikipedia more than 100,000,000 iPhones have been sold since the launch of the first edition four years ago. After the initial short wave of hyper excitement in the techie community, iPhone has become a device  used by masses, i.e. common folk with no inclinations to go gaga for new technologies and gadgets. Nevertheless, I'm sure if given a choice we all like shortcuts that allow us to do whatever we need in the least possible amount of steps.

iPhone's latest operating system, iOS 4.3 — available for the iPhone 3GS and the AT&T iPhone 4 — offers lots of efficient functions, some of which even hard-core users may not know exist. (Sorry, Android users, but that OS has so many versions and skins that a quick guide would be neither very quick nor much of a guide.)

Feel free to comment if you know of any handy shortcuts not listed below.

DOUBLE-TAP Even while your iPhone is locked, you can access the audio controls by double-tapping on the home button when the lock screen appears. This saves you the time it takes to unlock your phone, open a music-playing app like iPod and get to the volume and track controls. This feature is not limited to Apple’s iPod app. If you are using Pandora, for example, the same technique will bring up its controls.

VOICE ACCESS If you press and hold the home button while the phone is locked, you can still access Voice Control to place a phone call (or FaceTime call) or get to any

Are You Using Dropbox Yet?

Dropbox enables people to sync files and media across platforms and devices, in order to have them available from any location. The service also allows people to easily and quickly share files with others.

The latest numbers on TechCrunch.com have announced Dropbox has hit 25 million users and 200 million files uploaded per day, a huge growth from 4 million users just a year ago. I don't find the increase surprising though, as functionality provided by Dropbox is very practical for both business and personal use.

In fact, I think it is such an essential digital tool, that I decided to write this post for anyone still struggling with multiple versions of documents at home and at work, and various devices everyone seems to be juggling these days.

I started using Dropbox a few years ago after my work computer crashed and most of the files weren't subject to recovery. With Dropbox I simply don't need to remember to do backups, or store all my files in an ftp folder, because Dropbox folder looks just like a normal folder on my hard drive. The other advantage I love about it is that I can work offline, and be sure that as soon as my device has Internet connection the files will get updated.

My Dropbox folder has about ten subfolders, with more sub-subfolders, and so on, and it is so convenient it looks exactly the same and keeps this hierarchy on any PC I download Dropbox to. Once you download

PC's Are Past Their Peak

It looks like it is official - PC's have left their prime behind, and it is just the matter of time when they will become redundant not just in our homes, but also in schools and offices.

According to today's article in the Guardian, the global sales of PC's have been falling for the last three quarters. Main reasons are being recognised as the emergence of the media tablets on the market together with longer lifetime of PC's currently in use. In the article Research Group Gartner who along with IDC reported the decline, is wondering if this is the start of an ongoing trend - a question in my opinion that doesn't require an answer.

Not only tablets are more intuitive, fast and supereasy to use on the go, they also leave lower carbon footprint as they are much lighter and smaller, so it would really make more sense for manufacturers to move forward with the new technology and gradually reducing the production of PC's. Of course there must be huge reorganisations and logistical issues, and it is understandable why companies involved in PC-building business are anxious, but in the long run they don't have any choice.

Besides lagging behind technological trends, they also would risk to disturb their customers, for the social trend of now is using products that are not just good for you and whoever makes/distributes them, but everyone involved in the process as well as the environment. This way of conscious buying is certainly gaining popularity, and I think it will be here

Spring Clean Your Gadgets Collection

In the age of consumerism we are inevitably surrounded by all kinds of stuff, lots and lots of it. Clothes, household utilities, books, CDs, and more recently wide variety of gadgets. Some of those gadgets 5 years ago we absolutely "had to have", others were given to us as trendy Christmas presents which often didn't keep us entertained long past the New Year.

And yet we manage to keep them all, feeling guilty about throwing out these shiny pieces of plastic whose price tags are still fresh in our memory. These are certainly two factors that every spring clean make me feel guilty about bringing them out to recycling centre and accumulate more and more gadgets every year.

If you like me tend to feel liberated from getting rid of all the unnecessary junk, you'll be glad to read this article I came across in The New York Times, in which the author reasons which gadgets are worth keeping, and which have probably served their time and are now just taking up your living space.

iPad 2, or How Could It Get Any Better?

You don't have to be a worshiper of everything Apple comes up with to be absolutely in owe of iPad. And just when we thought it was the best thing ever - well, at least for the next few year - Apple has announced the year 2011 A Year of iPad 2 by launching an improved successor only a year after the first model.

The new iPad 2 is promised to be twice faster, have more enhanced graphics capability and camera, and is one third thinner at sleek 8.8mm (0.3in). Apple's Chief Excutive Steven P. Jobs, who has been on idefinite leave for health reasons, could not stay away on such a exciting occasion, and personally enveiled iPad 2 at an event in San Francisco, California.

The iPad 2 includes front and rear cameras, allowing video conversations, and comes in black and white versions. It will be available on March 11 in the United States at prices ranging from $499 to $829. It will be available in more than two dozen other countries on March 26, Mr. Jobs said.

The new iPad is built around a new chip that Apple designed, called A5, which is faster than its predecessor. Mr. Jobs said graphics performance would be nine times as fast. Mr. Jobs said that at 1.3 pounds it was a fifth of a pound lighter than the earlier model, yet it has the same 10-hour battery life.

“It feels totally different,” Mr. Jobs said.

Alluding to the white iPhone 4, which Apple

Ireland is Open for Business

On November 3rd, Danny McCoy, who is the Director General of IBEC, made a very compelling speech to the IBEC CEO Conference. The underlying theme of his speech was that Ireland is Open for Business.

Ireland is currently in the doldrums - our banking systems are on their knees, our economic future looks dire and the Irish people are traumatised. However, if we look at the bigger picture, we are, in reality doing relatively well (especially compared to (a) how we were doing over the past few year, (b) compared to other nations struggling to cope with the global economic downturn).  This is, in a large part, by our exports.

Have a look at this video which summarises the situation (created for IBEC especially for the IBEC CEO Conference mentioned above.

It is entitled Ireland by the numbers - Did you know that Ireland is home to 8 of the top 10 global technology companies and 15 of the top 25 medical devices firms. We produce enough beef each year to feed 30 million Europeans. 1 out of every 5 burgers served in McDonalds in Europe is Irish beef.

IBEC also produced this document and an accompanying PowerPoint that set out the substantial progress that Ireland has achieved in addressing its economic difficulties.

According to IBEC, fiscal adjustment remains on track and the challenge to meet the 3% deficit target by 2014 is challenging, but manageable. Ireland has the potential for growth, with a critical mass in a

First hands on iPad review in Ireland? (iPad and Digital Marketing)

We got hold of the iPad approx 3 days after launch (via apple, via ebay, via Sanfrancisco, via UPS) (If you can beat that send me an email and claim my crown!!!)

Who cares? What will it mean for Digital Marketing?

If the web has untethered us from the broadcast and publishing schedules of tv channels and newspapers, then mobile computing  frees us from the desk and the pc. Remember while there are 2 billion tvs in the world there are 5 billion mobile phone contracts. As a means to access and consume media, mobile devices are leading the party.

The iPad averaged .03% all web traffic for the first ten days after launch.

Think about it. That’s 03% of ALL web traffic, for a NEW device that only just launched. These numbers match the March numbers for all BlackBerry devices. See Usage Trends Here. Mobile is a crucial and integral part of Digital marketing and features as a key lecture in our Digital Marketing Diploma Course (Shamefaced Plug!)

Review

Firstly,  Ignore all the tech websites, they're coming at the iPad from the point of view of the tech obsessed geek mob. i.e. "I cant open it up with a screw driver and connect it to my ford capri or my zx81 emulator so its no good". I'm looking at this tool purely from the point of usability. i.e. does it allow me to do what I need to do.

1. What apple does best.

Apple has conquered the most important aspect of any technology and that's the user interface. What do

Microsoft Buying the News?

From -TechCrunch

Rupert Murdoch is pointing a gun to Google’s head, and Microsoft is helping him pull back the trigger. For the past few weeks, Murdoch and his officers at News Corp. have been very vocal about their distaste for Google and their desire to lead other media companies in a boycott of sorts.

Murdoch keeps threatening to stop letting Google index the WSJ.com and his other media sites, and wants other news sites to join him in this self-imposed silence. The folks at Microsoft’s Bing think this is a great idea. Not only that, but the FT reports that Microsoft is in fact in discussions with News Corp. and other publishers about the possibility of paying them to remove their sites from Google’s search index. This report comes on the heels of a meeting in Europe where Bing dangled the prospect of premium spots in search results to publishers and outright money for search R&D.

Facebook, Twitter and Social Media in the Workplace

A recent study by Deloitte found that nearly one-third of all business executives said social networking is a part of their business and operations strategy. A smaller number of respondents to the Deloitte survey reported  that they were "leveraging the Web 2.0 tools to build their brand, communicate internally, recruit employees and engage the workforce." Over half of the companies admitted that they did not have an official policy on the use or otherwise of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social networks. However, one of the major findings of this study was that three quarters of the respondents agree that it was easy to damage a company's reputation  on social media networks.   [caption id="attachment_1447" align="alignnone" width="324" caption="Facebook, Twitter and other Social Networks"][/caption] Other interesting stuff to come out of the survey is that

  • 53% of employees felt that their online profiles are none of their employers' business.
  • More than one-third never consider what their bosses, clients or colleagues think before posting. and interestingly ....
  • 61% have made significant adjustments to their social network pages to reflect their public nature—without the prompting of their superiors.
“While the decision to post videos, pictures, thoughts, experiences, and observations to social networking sites is personal, a single act can create far-reaching ethical consequences for individuals as well as organizations,” said Sharon Allen of Deloitte. “Therefore it is important for executives to be mindful of the implications and to elevate the discussion about the risks associated with it to the highest levels of leadership.”

Google Local Available in Ireland Google.ie

Up to now, when you search for local results in the some markets, then Google would include a map listing in the results. So, for example, if you search for "hotels in belfast", then Google woould supply the searcher with a map of Belfast along with a list of the (top 10) hotels and directions to the hotel - see image below: The problem was that this was not available in Ireland (ie searches on Google.ie, searches from Ireland). Now it is! So, if you are a business, you had better get onto Google local.   Here's why.  Let's say you are a restaurant in Gorey, Wexford.  Now lets assume that you went to the trouble of getting onto the major restaurant review sites and the tourism sites, etc.  So, yesterday, the results for "restaurants in athlone" were #1 - Boo.com #2 - IrishTourist.com #3 - Ireland-Guide.com Today, they are now pushed down and this is the result: So, now, there are bunch of competitors who weren't on the first page of Google eating your lunch!!!  All they did to get there was to add their details to Google Local.  So, get over to Google Local and add your business as fast as possible! The following video shows how to implement Google Local for your business:

Web Browser Market Share

As I go around the country speaking at various events, I would tend to browse the web as part of the presentation. I invariably swap between the main browsers and someone ALWAYS asks a question about versions and products.  In summary, there are 4 main brands - Mozilla make a product called Firefox, Microsoft make Internet Explorer, Apple makes Safari and Google makes Chrome (each of the links is to the download page for the latest version of that browser). I am afraid that I tend not to use Safari (it is a PC versus Apple thing!) and would bounce between the other three. I am then usually asked which is best - I would say that they are all pretty much equal.  As a user, I am interested in getting the web page that I am interested in to download, and fast.  Each of the browsers mentioned above meets this requirement, so I would tend not to favour either one over the other. As an SEO person, I would usually gravitate towards FireFox, as it has a whole range of plug-ins avalailable (go to the FireFox web site for more information on this aspect of the product). For current web browser market share information, have a look at a site called Market Share. I sometime lecture on the history of the browser (I was personally involved in the early days of the Internet Explorer versus Netscape browser war) and you do worse than to get this historic browser information from our old friend Wikipedia. Now, to close this article off,

Finding Broken Links using Free Broken Links Tools

When you manage a number of web sites and you are updating web pages and moving files, it is possible to generate broken links on the site.  Broken links happen when a page or file is requested by the browser and the destination path of file has been changed. There are a number of excellent tools, freely available, that allow you to find a broken link.  Note that these applications will not fix broken links, but will simply point out which links are broken, allowing you to identify and fix them. The following two products are ones that I have used and I can vouch for as reliable link checkers: The first one is from W3 - the World Wide Web Consortium and therefore has some “gravitas” associated with it. The exact page that you want to link to is the W3 Link Checker The second one that I find useful (and gives the correct broken link information) is from Dead-Links.com Try out these broken links checkers and let me know whether they work for you. What about dead links in WordPress?  There is a Broken Link Checker Plugin for Word Press available.  If you have a Word Press based blog and want to check any broken links, then you might want to install a Plugin for Word Press called the “404 Notifier”.  This product will email you about each of the broken links which was hit by visitor and got 404.  You can get this product from Alex King's Web Site or on the Alex's WordPress Plugins Page. Of course,

What is Google PageRank?

Further to a previous blog post, we have been asked to explain Google PageRank. It's a strange thing that Google do not appear to provide a simple and suitable answer to the question "What is Google PageRank?".  However, Wikipedia has a great description, simply search for "What is Google PageRank?". In summary, "PageRank is a link analysis algorithm used by the Google that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references." In laymans terms, PageRank is a value that Google places on a web page.  PageRank is valued between 0 and 10, with 10 being the highest.  You can see the value of PageRank of any web page by installing the Google Toolbar One very specific way to increase your PageRank (and therefore your Google Search results ranking - ie the ranking of your web iste in Google) is to increase the number of Inbound links to your site. Of course, this is not always the case.  Have a look at the following: (This is also from Wikipedia) Mathematical PageRanks (out of 100) for a simple network (PageRanks reported by Google are rescaled logarithmically). Page C has a higher PageRank than Page E, even though it has fewer links to it: the link it has is much higher valued. A web surfer who chooses a random link on every page (but with 15% likelihood jumps to a

How do you find out where a site is hosted?

As you may know, the country in which a web site is hosted is often (not always) critical to whether that site achieves Google ranking. For example, we have been doing some SEO work for a client.   We went through some initial On Page Search Engine Optimisation (title tags, content, description tags, etc) and we would normally notice some indicators as that suggest that the site is at least making some moving on the Google rankings. We did not see any of these indicators and started to get slightly concerned.  It immediately occurred to me that the web site, which is targeted on Ireland and Google.ie, may not be hosted in Ireland (which can cause a problem). Typically, in a situation like this, I would consult SEOMOZ.  However, when I did this, SEO MOZ could not give me any further information as to the location of the site.  So, I thought that I would pop over to MaxMind.  However, in order to determine the location of a web site through MaxMind you have to have the IP address.  So, in order to find the IP address, we have to go to another site, for example, Self SEO.  ONce you go to this site, all you have to do is enter the domain and it return the IP address. In fact, if you only want the country that the site is hosted in, then Self SEO will do fine. Of course, if you are a little bit techie, then you can do this throught the "DOS prompt" (or command window) in

Selecting Keywords for your AdWords campaign

In the previous blog, I wrote about Setting Goals in Google AdWords.  In this blog, we move onto discuss how you go about selecting your keywords for use in the campaign. There are 5 main steps required:

  1. Create an initial list by "brainstorming" with others (clients, colleagues, friends), writing down all the words that you think are the ones that people use to search for your products and services.
  2. Now Expand your list to include as many possible relevant words and options as possible
  3. Target the list by using Keyword Matching Options
  4. Refine your list
  5. Group the final keyword list into themes or clusters (most likely around your product and service  offerings)
Let''s expand on each of these points:
  1. Create an initial list. This is the easy part.  Simply sit down with a piece of paper, jotter, whiteboard, etc and write down as many words and phrases that you believe are used by potential prospects.
  2. Expand the list. Take the initial list and now expand that list by writing down every relevant keyword under every category that you have.  For example, if you are in the "ethnic foods" business, then your terms might look like:chinese food Irish food french food german food indian food eastern food Middle eastern food mexican food Jananese food Then start to look at the list and consider which terms would not make good keywords.  For example, you would not look for a "german dish", whereas you might look for "german food".  If in doubt, check a keyword using the Google Keyword Tool. Now expand your list by including plurals and synonyms for each phrase.  Your keyword list will now

How to Set Up Conversion Tracking in Google AdWords

The principle behind Google's Conversion Tracking is that you "track" the number of visitors that have "converted" after they come to your site via an AdWords campaign.  To find out how many have "converted" into a sale, lead, etc, all you have to do is track the number of people who land on a particular page on your site (for example, the number of visitors who land on the "Thank You" page that they are taken to after they purchase a product).  Let's say that you spend 1,000 EUROs getting 1,000 visitors to your site.  And then let's say that 100 of these people purchased something (and therefore land on the Thank You page.  You now have a conversion rate of 10%. If your product has a profit margin of 10 EURO, then you break even.  If it has a profit margin of 15 EUR, then you make money.  Finally, if you only make 9 EUR from your product, then you might have to re-think your approach! In order to set up Conversion Tracking in Google AdWords, you need to add piece of code (that Google provides) onto your web site ( the "Thank You" page in the previous example).  You can then track sales, leads, conversions, downloads, etc. In your Google AdWords account, click on the Conversion Tracking link and follow the simple instructions. Choose the Conversion Page Once you have the generated the code necessary to track conversions, simply drop it onto the page that the visitor  is brought to after they completed the action that you deem

Search Marketing World 2009

We attended Search Marketing World 2009 in Dublin today.  This is a conference specifically for Search Marketing folks.  I spoke at 3 of the sessions:

  • Search Engine Marketing Fundamentals: The Need to Know
  • Keyword Research for Killer PPC Ads
  • Keep SEO in Mind: Search-Friendly Web Design
The first session was attended by about 50 folks and we covered the basics of SEO. The second session was moderated by Aisling from Interactive Return and the other speaker with Ian Howie who  was representing Wordtracker.  The interesting thing is that I thought that Wordtracker was just about gone as a tool.  But how wrong I was!!  They are alive and well and they appear to have a great product there.  During this session I spoke about the Google Keyword Tool (and wnet through a demo of the product) and then Ian discussed some of the new, cool things in Wordtracker.  You should have a look at it sometime.  Note that they are currently in Beta for the new version. I met Ken McGaffin, the Chief Marketing Officer for Wordtacker - he contributed to the session and appears keen to extend the beta program, so if you are interested, then I am sure you can contect him at support@wordtracker.com. I am afriad that I did not manage to get a video from the conference yet (it is not over yet!), but I have found an interview with Ken on YouTube, so here you go ... The third session that I did was a follow up to the first.  I found out last night

How to Do Quick and Effective Keyword Research

This article should help you to do some keyword research for a small to mid sized web site .... 1.    Get a list of about 10 keywords from the client 2.    Go to Google.ie and type in each of the keywords into Google.ie 3.    Look at each of the top 5 ranked sites in Google, analyzing their keywords, looking at the meta data, etc.  Take a note of all the new keywords that are being added to the original list 4.    The list of keywords should now be longer than the original 10 or so. 5.    For each of the new  list, go to Google Keyword Tool.  Click on the Website Content Radio Button [caption id="attachment_1003" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Google Keyword Tool - Website Content Option"][/caption] 6.    Type in the web address for each of the web sites that you found in Step 3 above, once again analyzing each of these sites for each of the keywords.  Take note of the keywords and terms that that they are using and add any new ones to the list of keywords that you are developing. 7.    Next, using Google Keyword Tool, click on “Descriptive words or phrases”: [caption id="attachment_1004" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Google Keyword Tool - Descriptive Words or Phrases Option"][/caption] 8.    Take each of the keywords in your expanded list and use this tool (focused on Ireland) to further anlayse each of the keywords on this list. 9.    For each keyword, Google will provide you with a list of up to 200 other keywords. Matt Cutts of Google Discussed Google's Indexing ...

Matt Cutts (a chap  from Google who seems to know a bit and blogs about what he knows) has released an  SEO related video presentation where he discusses (a) what Google did for webmasters in 2008 and (b) what he sees happening more and more in 2009.  Future predictions mostly deal with where blackhat search engine optimization is headed and it looks really nasty. At any rate, the video (which I have embedded below) is interesting and if you can sit through 23 minutes of Matt Cutts boring you with dry talk of what Google has done then I'd recommend taking a look just to see if you find anything you didn't already know. A small recap - and this isn't everything he discusses - appears below. These are just a few of the topics that are worth mentioning because Google actually did produce something worth talking about:

  • Optical Character Recognition for PDF files
  • Google Trends
  • Android
  • Flash crawl
  • List of sites that link to 404 pages
  • Google Chrome
  • Google Analytics advertiser segmentation
These are products and services that Google rolled out in 2008 that are worth looking into more. If you haven't heard of these then you should look into more information about them. There is plenty more that Matt Cutts talks about.
