Scandinavian Airlines carried out research that showed that their best customers were high earning couples who booked their holidays together. So with that in mind, they created a brilliant interactive 2 for 1 campaign which focused on this particular finding.
The campaign focused mostly on a mobile app that required two people to put their phones together at the same time to unlock a discount code for them both. The app was promoted with an email blast to over 100,000 customers as well as through advertising and social media promotion. Users were asked to scan a QR code which played a video on their phones (they had to hold the phones up side by side) and the final screen showed half the discount code on each phone.
I’m not sure many people would have gone to all the trouble for a regular promotional campaign, but the fact that there was a heavy discount involved probably means there was heavy usage of the app. Apart from the sales side of things, it also achieved Scandinavian Airlines’ goal of making couples spend more time together during their busy schedules.
