50 Million Facebook Likes Clicked Daily – Is That $9Million a Day In Revenue From Brands?

The like button has been a huge success on Facebook but until today we only really knew that there were billions of the like buttons served every day but had very little info on how many were being clicked. Today here at Techcrunch Disrupt Carolyn Everson who is the Vice President of Global Advertising Sales at Facebook was talking about her new role when she revealed that 50 million likes are clicked for brands every single day. This is different to the one billion likes that are clicked around the web in general.  Its a stunning figure that shows just how much data Facebook is gathering around our likes and interests with each of those likes popping in to databases which advertisers can of course use to help them target us. Everson who is new in the job also revealed that mobile usage was massively on the up and that users accessing Facebook via their mobile device were twice as engaged as users arriving from a computer. On mobile advertising she said that they didn’t have anything in place “yet” with a serious emphasis on the word Yet.

Race For Likes Nearing An End

The big message was that the huge rush for likes was coming to an end and that brands were at a place where they were all figuring out what to do with the likes and how to keep them more engaged. Everson said “There was a race where big brands used APIs to grow likes but now there is a race to see what brands can do to increase engagement”. It’s an interesting thing to say as somebody in charge of selling more Facebook ads but she also said “Mark Zuckerberg’s vision is to make photos as interesting and useful as a friend sharing a photo on the site and we are only 1% of the way to where we want to be in making these ads better and more useful”.

How Much Cash Is Facebook Making?

So if brands are having 50 million likes clicked every single day just how much cash is Facebook making? Let’s make some assumptions…Lets say that 75% of the likes are by people who actually want to like the brand without seeing an advert. That would take us down a quarter of the 50 million paid likes to 12.5 million likes. Now lets take a very cautious 70 cents (likes can cost anything from a couple of cents to a couple of dollars) per like and that gives you about $9 million per day in revenues or $270 million per month or over $3 billion a year in revenues. I know there are a lot of assumptions in there but when you think that recently Facebook were at run rate revenues of 2 billion a year this new figure probably makes a lot of sense. It’s an approximate number but could Facebook be making $9 million a day in revenues from people clicking on the like buttons for brands? Could it even be a lot higher given our cautious assumptions?
