What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing is one of the less utilised online marketing avenues, and is essentially about driving traffic from one website to another.  It is a revenue-sharing venture between a website owner and an online merchant. The website owner places advertisements on the site to either help sell the merchant's products or to send potential customers to the merchant's website. Other actions also may include a referral or a newsletter sign-up. When a visitor of the advertiser's website completes one of the predetermined actions, the affiliate receives a payment.

There are three ways to earn money through affiliate marketing. They are called pay per click, pay per sale and pay per lead. It is this cost per action model that defines Affiliate Marketing and sets it apart from other channels. While often overlooked by advertisers, Affiliate Marketing can be an excellent source of revenue or a good brand awareness excercise.
